COLLECTION METHODOLOGY

Statistics are extracted from the Offence Reporting System 2 of the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management, and are compiled according to the date an offence becomes known to police, which is not necessarily the date an offence was committed, nor the date a crime report was processed.

The basic counting unit for police statistics is the victim, which is defined according to the type of offence and can be a person, organisation, premise or motor vehicle.

SCOPE AND COVERAGE

Offences reported to and recorded by Tasmania Police.

DEFINITION OF FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

N/A

DEFINITION OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Sexual assault is defined based on Tasmanian legislation and is largely consistent with the section of the same name in subdivision 31 of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Offence Classification (cat. no. 1234.0).

The specific offences in Tasmanian legislation that count towards sexual assault are the following:

Under the Criminal Code Act 1924:
  • Sexual intercourse with a young person (Section 124(1));
  • Permit unlawful sexual intercourse with a young person on premises (Section 125);
  • Maintain a sexual relationship with a young person (Section 125A(2));
  • Indecent act with a young person (Section 125B(1));
  • Sexual intercourse with a person with a mental impairment (Section 126(1));
  • Indecent assault (Section 127(1));
  • Incest (Section 133(1));
  • Permitting incest (Section 133(2)); and
  • Rape (Section 185(1))

Under the Police Offences Act 1935:
  • Assault with indecent intent (Section 35(3))
